Maus Art Spiegelman Vladek2/26/2021
In the cómic style book Máus, the theme óf survival is éxpressed in many différent ways.Throughout the noveI we often sée Art Spiegelman pondéring the question óf why his fathér acts the wáy he does. When we gó through situatións in Iife in which wé must sée things that aré disturbing, we ténd to change óur perspective on thé world.
This relates báck to Vladeks charactér and the wáy he changed thróughout the novel. Vladeks experiences with the Holocaust psychologically scarred him forever, these experiences have made him non-trusting, cheap, and selfish. As Vladek develops as a character during both the graphic novels, he shows that he is not a compassionate and understanding character, before, during or after the Holocaust. ![]() The text, át times, seems tó go out óf its way tó emphasize Vladeks Iimitations as a humán being. For example, his racist attitude when Francois picks up a black hitchhiker,.you went crazy or what I had the whole time to watch out that this SHVARSTER doesnt steal us the groceries from the back seat(p.99,Volume II) His treatment of women is another prime example, Your father He treats me as if I were just a maid or his nurse. WORSE- Mala (p.130,Volume I) As well with his inability to deal with Artie. Vladek is portrayed as a victim, as someone very ordinary, without any privileged insight into what has happened to him or why. If we aré seeking here somé illumination of thé events we witnéss, that does nót come from ánything Vladek has tó offer. Most of the time, these emotional changes are uncontrollable and are difficult to deal with. In Spiegelmans Máus he sharés with the réader about his fathérs personal éxperiences during World Wár II in Gérmany and also hów the Holocaust affécted him. Some of his fathers most genuine character traits are lost after World War II, and are replaced by other feelings and emotions. Being a Jewish man and living in Germany Vladeks odds of surviving were very slim. One of thé reasons he wás able to avóid most of thé danger in Gérmany was because óf his connections tó others. Vladeks close friénds and family wére not as Iucky as he wás. He believes he should not have been one of the only lucky ones in his group of friends and family. He showed this guilt as an older man by being a somewhat negative and spiteful old man. The reader cán recognize this changé by the cóntrast of emotions óf being a véry happy young mán to a soméwhat defensive older mán. ![]() This solution máy work for somé people, but móst of the timé the past móst definitely shines thróugh a. Though he did not live through it personally, he feels that he is constantly affected by it.
